Configuring IIS Web Server

This help topic is for people who host their own web site or are allowed to configure their IIS log file format.

FastStats Analyzer is compatible with any log file that contains a very bare minimum of data. You should only read this web page if you are getting a FastStats Analyzer error or warning. The log file format described on this web page is the most optimal you can get -- it contains the least amount of information that will completely utilize all FastStats Analyzer features.

IIS 7.0, IIS 6.0, IIS 5.1, IIS 5.0, and IIS 4.0 web servers allow you to pick and choose what information is put into your log file. Follow these steps to properly configure IIS:

1. Open the IIS Manager ( from the Start menu, click Run. Type inetmgr and click OK. ) Expand the local computer.
2. Select a Web or FTP site, right-click, and then click Properties.
3. On the Web Site tab, select the Enable Logging check box.
4. Choose W3C Extended Log File Format as the Active log format.
5. Click the Properties button.
6. Select the Extended Properties or Advanced tab and make sure the following fields are selected:
Date, Time, Client IP Address, Method, URI Stem, HTTP Status, Bytes Received, Bytes Sent, User Agent, Referrer, Cookie.
Any additional fields will not affect the analysis process. Order is not important. If Authenticated User is present, you can add that as well.
7. Click Apply.
8. Click OK until you have closed all dialog boxes.

FastStats Analyzer will now recognize your log files. Here is an example header and log line:

#Fields: date time s-sitename s-computername s-ip cs-method cs-uri-stem cs-uri-query s-port cs-username c-ip cs-version cs(User-Agent) cs(Cookie) cs(Referer) cs-host sc-status sc-substatus sc-win32-status sc-bytes cs-bytes time-taken

2003-12-11 00:00:31 W3SVC538485712 VPST30-VPS2 GET /asptest.asp - 80 - HTTP/1.0 Mozilla/4.0+(compatible;+EMonitor+6.1.5+Windows+NT) VisitorID=49392831 - 200 0 0 297 229

IIS 3 servers don't allow for much flexibility, but Analyzer will still handle them.

The IIS3 log file format does not include any referrer or browser information., -, 3/2/98, 0:06:17, W3SVC, PARTAGAS,, 1750, 382, 2786, 200, 0, GET, /index.html, -

IP address, -, Date, Time, Username, Site name, Server IP address, File Size, Client Data Transmitted, Duration of request, Error code, Win32 Error code, (GET/POST), File Requested, -
